Abrasion resistance

Flowing water that possibly contains abrasive material (sand, stones, …) can weigh heavily on the wall surface of the used product. Abrasion resistance can be measured using  the Darmstadt testing method. According to the measures, given by DIN EN 295, part of a tube with a length of 1000+/-10 mm, is closed on either side by front covers and then filled with a sand-gravel-water-mixture. Then both ends of the tube are alternately tilted over 22.5° lengthwise, in order to move the test material inside the pipe, causing friction. Natural, unbroken, round grained quartz gravel is used as test material. This movement is repeated up to 400,000 cycles, after which the erosion on the wall surface is measured. Thio Material undergoes this test with the same results as cement concrete. During the first phase of the test the thin sulphuric sheet is abraded, whereas during the second phase, abrasion is  reduced by the presence of the aggregates on the freed pipe surface. With vitrified clay pipes the first phase lasts longer on account of the glazed surface. As soon as this sheet is abraded, the loss of material  is quicker than concrete or with Thio Material.
