Where Innovation Happens
Since 2011, our R&D center in Laakdal (Belgium) has driven an intensive innovation journey focused on sulphur-based concrete technology. In close collaboration with industry partners, universities, and research institutes, we’ve conducted extensive testing and pilot projects to refine and validate our solutions. This long-term commitment culminated in 2022 with the launch of our dedicated production site in Baudour (Belgium), where both THIOTRACK® and THIOTUBE® are now manufactured—marking a major milestone in sustainable infrastructure development.
THIOTRACK Timeline
- 2014 – First Sulphur Concrete Sleepers Installed
The very first sulphur concrete sleepers are laid in Ostend, in collaboration with Infrabel—marking the beginning of a long-term partnership. - 2021 – Framework Agreement with Infrabel
Thiotrack signs a milestone contract with Infrabel for the delivery of 200,000 sulphur concrete sleepers over eight years. - February 2022 – Factory Launch in Baudour
A new production facility opens in Baudour, with an annual capacity of over 100,000 sleepers. - October 2022 – First Major Project in Jemappes
The first large-scale installation: 12,000 sulphur concrete sleepers delivered and laid at the Jemappes station site. - January 2024 – 10-Year Durability Confirmed
Ten sleepers installed in Ostend in 2014 are removed for inspection. Test results confirm they retain the same strength and performance as new sleepers produced in Baudour.
THIOTUBE Timeline
- 2015 – Real-Life Testing Begins
Aquafin launches long-term testing of THIOCRETE under extreme conditions at five locations. - 2021 – Official Recognition in Flanders
Sulphur concrete is integrated into the SB250 sewer specifications (v4.1a). - 2022 – Market Launch & First Project
After 11 years of R&D, THIOTUBE is officially launched. The first project in Brakel installs 550m of pipe. The product also receives the first verified EPD in the wastewater sector. - 2023 – Expansion in France
THIOTUBE is recognized in Wallonia’s Qualiroute standard. Projects are completed in Lille, Épernay, and Amiens. - 2024 – First Project in the Netherlands
Installation of THIOTUBE begins in Arnhem. - 2025 – Standardization & Scale-Up
Sulphur concrete is included in SB250 v5.1. By mid-2025, more than 35 projects and 20 km of THIOTUBE pipes will have been installed.
