Infrabel: First in the World to Go Green on the Tracks
Infrabel is leading the way in railway sustainability by becoming the first infrastructure manager worldwide to green its entire sleeper supply. Traditional cement sleepers are being replaced with low-carbon sulphur concrete alternatives, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of the Belgian rail network.
Over the next 8 years, 200,000 sulphur concrete sleepers will be installed—25,000 per year, helping Infrabel cut 6,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.
On March 6, 2021, the first green sleepers were inaugurated in the presence of Benoît Gilson (CEO, Infrabel) and Georges Gilkinet (Minister of Mobility). National press attended the event.
